Scholarship fraud and scams

Be careful in search Scholarship

By; Admin

Scholarship is a beautiful way to success your study. But be carefull while searching or respond to any offered and opportunity of scholarship. You have to assure your self if it was a real.

Scholarship Fraud by: Fabiola Castillo

Many scholarship-locating services will tell you that “millions of dollars in private scholarship money goes unused annually.” The fact is, almost all available financial aid comes from the federal government or from individual colleges.

More than 340,000 people are duped by scholarship fraud every year. Private scholarships are usually awarded to very specific applicants, such as students with a particular career interest, or members of a certain religious organization or church. These institutions have created funds for students. They are willing to give them to qualified people and have no interested in keeping the money a secret.

You can easily learn more about these opportunities by checking with appropriate institutions. Contact organizations or clubs to determine what they look for in an applicant. Your high school or college guidance counselor can also provide information on scholarships.

Common Scholarship Scams By: Julie Harvard

According to the Federal Trade Commission’s Scholarship Scams, if you receive an offer that uses one of these tactics, be suspicious:

  • The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back Beware of scholarship-finding services that guarantee you will win a scholarship or your money will be refunded. If it is a scam, you will find it extremely difficult to qualify for refund, because this refund guaranteed often have terms & condition attached. Get and review refund policies before you pay.
  • Ask for your credit card or bank account to hold the winning scholarship for you If you receive phone call saying that you have won a scholarship and they need your credit card or bank account in order to hold the winning scholarship for you. Never! Never give out any credit card or bank account without getting information or confirmation in writing first. It might be a set-up for an unauthorized withdrawal from your account.
  • A super low interest rate loan that need advance fee This scam will offer you an unusual low interest rate loan but they will ask you to pay for a fee during the loan application submission. And when you pay for it, the promised loan never materializes. Be aware, real education loan usually deduce the fees from the disbursement check. It never required you to pay for a fee when you submit an application. If the loan is not issued by a bank or other recognized lender, it is probably a scam. Check the offer with your local bank’s manager before you pay..
  • You can’t get this scholarship information from anywhere else There are many scholarship lists available for public. A real scholarship is normally announced to public and you can get this information easily from college and the recognized financial aid agencies. Start your own researching from those locations before you pay for somebody to do the work for you.
  • You won a scholarship prize! The scam will inform you that you have won a college scholarship worth a few thousands of dollars but you will be asked to pay for a “redemption” fee or taxes before they can release your prize. If you receive this good news but you don’t remember entering any scholarship contest, be suspicious. Even If you have entered the contest, check and get the winning confirmation letter first before any payment being made. There are scams use the real scholarship contest to cheat for money, they know many people are enrolled for the contest and by chance you are in the list.

The above are just some commons in scholarship scams. There are still many other scholarship scams around. Always be precaution in any scholarship offer to you and always check for confirmation before any money pay out. The basic guideline is “if you have to pay money to get money, it’s probably a scam”.

Obama Care to Unemployment

May 9th, 2009 hayadin 1 comment

Obama wants to ease rules on aid to jobless

By; Tom Abate

President Obama said he wants to make it easier for people to collect unemployment benefits while they go to school or retrain for jobs, promising to “lay a new foundation for our economic growth by investing in our citizens.” One immediate effect of his announcement should be to help college students obtain federal Pell Grants if they or their families become unemployed since filing for financial aid.

He said he would soon outline plans that would require state governments and colleges to change many of their practices and rules. “I will lay out a fundamental rethinking of our job training, vocational education and community college programs,” said Obama, adding that the unemployment system “should be not just a safety net but a stepping-stone.”

One immediate effect of his announcement should be to help college students obtain federal Pell Grants if they or their families become unemployed since filing for financial aid.

How his plans would affect California – where unemployment is already 11.2 percent – is unclear as state officials await details of this new program, which would touch everything from unemployment insurance to community colleges.

“No one has seen what this proposal is,” said Deborah Bronow, deputy director for unemployment insurance at California’s Employment Development Department.

But administration officials said Obama wants states to let unemployment insurance beneficiaries continue collecting checks while they attend a broader array of educational or vocational programs than is currently allowed.

“We want the states to make use of the latitude they have to make an expansive definition of retraining,” said Deputy Undersecretary of Education Robert Shireman, former director of a Berkeley nonprofit, the Institute for College Access and Success.

Student aid applicants affected by layoffs should get an immediate boost from the president’s program, said Darrill Anderson of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

Obama also envisions allowing unemployed workers to collect unemployment checks while pursuing associate or bachelor’s degrees, but state officials aren’t sure how that would work, because benefits – even at the current maximum of 79 weeks – wouldn’t last long enough unless a person had just a few classes to finish.

Get Scholarship Application

By: Admin

Scholarship is one way to help You get a better future. This was related to study financing that must be cope along. For those who have rich and able parent finance may be not a problems.. But for those who have unable parents or unlucky boys that have no parents, scholarship is the best answer. First what you have to do is find information related to scholarship, fill the form application.

Scholarship applications can be extremely complex and confusing. Not only does every different scholarship body want something different, but none of them seem to set the deadline dates for the same week, which no doubt would confuse you even more! When you are applying for college, it can seem like you are going round in an endless circle, trying to finish tasks that you have already started but seemingly getting nowhere. It can be a chore just to finish one application to a college, let alone fill in several for scholarships as well. However, help is at hand and you can make life easier for yourself with these basic tips:

Read every application carefully.

Every scholarship requires something different because no two are the same, so you cannot just fill out one for them all and hope that you will get a measure of success. It does not work like that. There will always be something different expected of you, whether there is a word limit on your personal statement or fewer letters of is recommendation. If you do not read it and comply with the guidelines then you application will be discarded straight away.

Prepare in advance.

Before you even begin to research scholarships in depth, you should practice your personal statement. Style is extremely important so you should write it out the summer before you plan to apply to ensure that get it completely right. If a personal statement reflects you then it is perfect for your applications. Keep the copy of the draft you wrote and then use that as a foundation on which to build your actually personal statements when it comes to applying for real.

Work with the space you have.

Try not to use continuation sheets on scholarship applications because the likelihood is then that representatives or assessors will get bored half way through. Try to keep all of the information to a minimum but include as many activities as you can in your list. You could even add a few into your personal statement if you run out of space. However, if you do not have enough space then leave out the ones that are not important, and plan this out in advance because there is nothing worse that Tipp-ex marks on an application.

Look at what they want.

You should always look at what the provider of the scholarship is asking or and give them what they want. Never ever lie on an application form but tailor your own personality traits to your advantage. If they are looking for someone with character then communicate that in your writing style. If they are looking for integrity then mention an example of it. Always back up what you have to say by just tailor what you know about yourself to what they are looking for in you!

Always give your reasons why you want to study a certain subject.

Many individuals fall down at this step because they do not justify their reasons for wanting to take a certain subject. There must be a reason behind your choice but failing to communicate it or failing to put your reasons across in a logical and well-reasoned way can ultimately ensure that you fall at the last hurdle!

Read it through

Never send an application form for a scholarship without reading it trough first. Make sure that you have said everything that you want to say and in a clear and concise but logical way so it is easy to read. If it passes your critical eye then I should pass theirs!
